Light Drawing

We transformed the gazebo in the playground into a reflective den. Linking up Amy’s camera with a TV the children picked a coloured torched and entered into the sensory space. The children could see themselves on the TV, and we asked them to jump up and down, swirl around and make patterns with their torches. As the photographs were taken the children could see the still images on the TV, and rushed to the screen to pick out their light patterns. Each class worked together to make some really beautiful light drawings.

Hanging Sculptures

Looking at the beautiful drawings from the previous workshop the children were asked to pick a coloured ribbon. Each child’s ribbon was a tall as they were and we had a huge range of reflective and shiny materials. The children were asked to create a hanging sculpture using their ribbon and the reflective materials. Every child created something totally unique and the sculptures looked wonderful.

Light Mural

We wanted to create something that each child had made a contribution to, but when put together created a large sculpture. We gave each child a hoop of wire, the children were then asked to shape the wire however they liked. We had tissue paper and cellophane in a huge range of colours, and asked the children to cover their wire shapes in the coloured paper. Each mini sculpture was a different shape, size and had so many pretty colours.

Exhibition

We transformed the hall into an exhibition of the work Reception children had made throughout the whole week. Attaching each one of the mini wire sculptures together we made a light mural, and hung it from the ceiling, lighting it from behind to make a beautiful hanging wall. We hung every ribbon sculpture from the ceiling creating clusters of shiny sculptures. The photographs from the light drawings were projected onto the wall behind the light mural. It looked beautiful, and we really pleased with all the children’s work and what they had achieved. We invited the parents and families to come and have a look at the exhibition, and join in making some of their own artwork from all the materials we had on offer. We had a wonderful response to the work the children had made from both parents and staff.

Stockwell Festival

Birkby Nursery School's Art Week and Green Day

Local Nomad had a fantastic week at Birkby Nursery, have a look at the fun we had in the photographs.

On the first day we made our own paint from raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and spices. We had large bowls and used spoons and potato mashers to squish the fruit and get amazing natural colours. We used our natural paints to paint pieces of driftwood beautiful colours. 

On the second day we explored colour even further by dying huge pieces of white fabric. The playground turned into a multicoloured painting! We hung the fabric to dry on the fence and the bright colours looked magnificent.

On the third day we experimented with sculpture, the children used clay and the painted driftwood to create their own unique fantastic forms.

On the last day the school had a ‘Green Day’ and parents were invited to come into the school. We created an installation outside using all the work the children had made over the last week. Parents, families and other staff from the school came to have a look at what we had made and investigate what the children had  told them so much about. Working with the parents and the children we used sticks, ribbon, wool, plastic bags and beads to create weaves and some very impressive and delightful hangings. 

Greenfield's Kaleidoscope

We arrived at Greenfields Nursery with an overflowing car full of recycled materials. The morning was spent painting, cutting, sticking and threading using tissue paper, cellophane, plastic bottles and CD cases to create reflective surfaces and collages.

After lunch we brought in a huge tunnel we had made from recycled bike boxes, lined with tin foil. Using the large collage the children had made we created a giant kaleidoscope, the children experimented with torches and explored the new environment.

It was a brilliant day; the children loved the tunnel and the sensory experience. We hung their beautiful reflective collages from the window to let the multicoloured light stream in.

With the help of the guys at Fortuna house we put up the photo’s in the dining room, I think it looks great! Certainly adds some life to the room.

'Drawing with Light'

Yesterday Local Nomad ran a photography workshop at Fortuna House in Bournemouth, Fortuna House is a hostel for homeless young people. The dining room was well in need of a bit of colour and life – so the idea was to create some artwork for the walls.

We experimented with LED’s, torches and coloured filters in a dark room to create some very cool light graffiti. Have a look at the photographs!!

The session went really well, and the young people's photographs will soon be up in the dining room and they will certainly add some colour!
