Greenfield's Kaleidoscope

We arrived at Greenfields Nursery with an overflowing car full of recycled materials. The morning was spent painting, cutting, sticking and threading using tissue paper, cellophane, plastic bottles and CD cases to create reflective surfaces and collages.

After lunch we brought in a huge tunnel we had made from recycled bike boxes, lined with tin foil. Using the large collage the children had made we created a giant kaleidoscope, the children experimented with torches and explored the new environment.

It was a brilliant day; the children loved the tunnel and the sensory experience. We hung their beautiful reflective collages from the window to let the multicoloured light stream in.

With the help of the guys at Fortuna house we put up the photo’s in the dining room, I think it looks great! Certainly adds some life to the room.

'Drawing with Light'

Yesterday Local Nomad ran a photography workshop at Fortuna House in Bournemouth, Fortuna House is a hostel for homeless young people. The dining room was well in need of a bit of colour and life – so the idea was to create some artwork for the walls.

We experimented with LED’s, torches and coloured filters in a dark room to create some very cool light graffiti. Have a look at the photographs!!

The session went really well, and the young people's photographs will soon be up in the dining room and they will certainly add some colour!

Bubble wrap takes over at First Friends!

Following the 'Painting with Puddles' workshop we came inside and created the ‘Bubble Wrap World’. We arrived armed with a car full of recycled materials and multicoloured bubble wrap to make our own little world inside the nursery. We created a pink fabric square in the centre of the nursery to create our world in. Outside the fabric square the children waited with anticipation to take a peak inside. Whilst we were setting up, we could hear the children talking. Their imaginations were running wild as to what they thought was inside, one little girl couldn't resist poking her head in. When we were ready we told the children to take their shoes off before entering, they couldn’t wait to see what we had made. To enter our world the children had to crawl underneath the fabric, once inside they bounced around enjoying new materials, sounds and forms. We had many different materials including foam, torches, pieces of plastic and old wool reels overflowing into our world. The children had a fantastic time experiencing and experimenting in this new environment.

We gave the children a digital camera to record the experience through their own eyes, they took some beautiful photographs.

Local Nomad at First Friends Nursery

Local Nomad made a trip up north to Walsall’s First Friends Nursery to try out our workshop ideas.

We kicked off with ‘Painting with Puddles’, using coloured painted we filled tyres, buckets, chairs... you name it. The playground was transformed into an interactive sculpture. We had reams of white fabric to experiment with dying in the coloured puddles. 
The children rushed out to see what this new exciting addition to their playground was. Some jumped (literally) right in, and others took a little longer but soon everyone was playing with the colourful puddles and the fabric. This culminated in many beautiful patterns on the fabric.  The children has also made coloured splashes on the playground from our puddles.

Whilst the children had lunch we lay the fabric out to dry. After the children had finished their lunch we began our afternoon workshop where we stretched the fabric from the nursery fence to bamboo sticks we had installed. The children had lots of fun stretching and weaving the fabric making hiding places and divides across the grass – it looked wonderful as you can see. At the end of a fantastic day we had a magnificent multicoloured installation
